When seeking a premium experience in Ho Chi Minh City, travelers often look toward the shimmering skyline of District 1. However, the true luxury of Saigon lies in its secrets—the stories preserved in amber within its hidden alleys.

At the heart of our Ho Chi Minh Hidden Alleys & History: Private Motorbike Tour is a stop that defines the city’s heritage: Cheo Leo Café.

The Oldest Living Legend: Since 1938

Established in 1938, Cheo Leo is more than just a coffee shop; it is a living museum of Saigonese culture. While the city outside has transformed into a bustling metropolis, Cheo Leo remains a sanctuary of nostalgia. For the discerning traveler, this isn’t just a caffeine fix—it’s an exclusive invitation to witness a fading art form.

Witnessing the pulse of Saigon: A morning at Cheo Leo Cafe, where history and local life collide in every cup of “Vợt” coffee.

The Craft: The Art of the “Vợt” Coffee

In an era of espresso machines, Cheo Leo honors the traditional “Vợt” (cloth net filter) method. The coffee is brewed in century-old clay pots, ensuring a temperature and texture that cannot be replicated by modern technology.

As part of our curated travel experiences, we ensure you don’t just drink the coffee—you understand the craft. Watch as the owners meticulously filter the beans to create the perfect Bạc Xỉu (white coffee), a creamy, aromatic delight that has been a local favorite for over 80 years.

Stepping back in time: Experience the soul of Saigon at Cheo Leo Cafe, a hidden gem preserved since 1938.

Why Visit Cheo Leo on a Private Tour?

Navigating the labyrinthine alleys of District 3 to find this hidden gem can be daunting for the solo traveler. By choosing a private motorbike tour, you elevate your visit from a simple outing to a professional, seamless experience:

Expert Storytelling: Our professional, English-speaking guides provide deep historical context that you won’t find in guidebooks.

Safety & Comfort: Skip the stress of traffic. Sit back on a vintage-style ride as we navigate the city’s dynamic streets safely.

Personalized Itinerary: Because this is a 100% private tour, you can linger longer at Cheo Leo, soaking in the jazz music and the scent of roasting beans without feeling rushed.

Beyond the Coffee: A Gateway to History

Cheo Leo is just one chapter in the story we tell. Our tour bridges the gap between the aromatic quiet of the cafes and the pivotal historical landmarks of the 20th century. From the Secret Underground Bunkers to the Thich Quang Duc Monument, we offer a narrative-driven journey through the authentic heart of Ho Chi Minh City.

Stepping back in time: Experience the soul of Saigon at Cheo Leo Cafe, a hidden gem preserved since 1938.

Imagine you are standing on a busy street corner in Ho Chi Minh City. The air is filled with the scent of charcoal-grilled pork, the “clink” of metal spatulas on hot griddles, and the non-stop energy of thousands of motorbikes. Saigon is a city that never stops cooking, and for food lovers, it is paradise.

Many travelers arrive with a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) spirit, wanting to find those legendary hidden spots with just a map and a sense of adventure. However, deciding where to begin is tricky when there are so many great spots.. If you decide to go with an expert, you might wonder: how do I choose the best food tour company in HCMC? Look for a team that goes beyond the tourist center of District 1, prioritizes your safety (whether on a motorbike or a vintage Jeep), and employs local “storytellers” who know the history behind every bowl.

How to Choose the Best Food Tour Company in HCMC: 5 Things to Check Before You Book (2026)

With hundreds of scooter tours available in Saigon, it can be hard to tell the professionals apart from the amateurs. To ensure your night is about great food and not unnecessary risks, here is your essential checklist:

1. Check the “International Tour Operator License”

This is the most critical check for your safety. In Vietnam, a legal operator must deposit 500 million VND (~$20,000 USD) to hold an International Tour Operator License.

✪ The Insurance Trap: If you have an accident with a company that does not have this license, your travel insurance will not cover you.

✪ The Reality: 90% of scooter tours in Ho Chi Minh City do not have this license because they cannot meet the deposit requirements.

✪ The Saigon Adventure Difference: We are a fully licensed legal entity. Because we pay our taxes (VAT), your tour is officially recognized, and your travel insurance remains valid and secured.

2. Ask About Dedicated Accident Packages

Standard travel insurance is great, but a top-tier company should offer additional local protection for peace of mind.

Saigon Adventure offers a dedicated accident insurance package for just $3–$5 USD per person. This ensures you have immediate local support and coverage without having to fight with your home insurance provider over a minor incident.

3. Check Rankings Across Multiple OTAs

Don’t just trust a single review site. A truly reliable company will have a consistent, top-tier reputation across all major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs).

Look for companies that consistently hold the #1 spot on platforms like Viator, GetYourGuide, Tripadvisor, and Klook. This proves that their service quality is high enough to satisfy the strict standards of international booking platforms.

4. Inquire About Driver Training Standards

In the chaos of Saigon traffic, you want more than just a “guy with a bike.” You need a professional.

✪ Ask the company: How long are your drivers trained before they can lead a tour?

✪ At Saigon Adventure, every driver must undergo a rigorous one-month training program before they are allowed to lead a single guest. We don’t just hire riders; we train professional guides who prioritize your safety and comfort in traffic.

5. Look for Menu and Experience Flexibility

A “one-size-fits-all” tour is usually a sign of a company that doesn’t care about your specific needs. The best companies offer good customization:

✪ Dietary Needs: Can they handle vegetarian, vegan, or “no-seafood” requests?

✪ Tasting Options: Do they offer different “tiers” of eating, such as a 7-tasting light tour or a 12-tasting feast?

✪ Rider Preference: Do you have the option to choose between male or female riders to make you feel more comfortable?

The Bottom Line

Booking a food tour in Saigon should be about the thrill of the “unseen” alleys and the joy of local flavors, but it must start with a foundation of safety. By checking these five points, you ensure that your 2026 trip remains a highlight of your life, not a legal headache.

Ready to book the #1 rated experience in the city? 👉 View our Fully Licensed & Insured Saigon Food Tours Here

Saigon. Ho Chi Minh City. Call it what you will, but one thing is undeniable: this is Vietnam’s buzzing heart, an exhilarating metropolis that demands to be explored with an adventurous spirit. From the constant symphony of motorbike horns to the intoxicating aroma of Saigon street food on every corner, it’s an adventure for all five senses.

At Saigon Adventure, we want you to dive in headfirst. This comprehensive guide is packed with local insights and practical tips to ensure your trip to Ho Chi Minh City is smooth, exciting, and unforgettable.

1. Logistics: Visas, Currency, and When to Go

The Best Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City

Saigon has a tropical climate with two main seasons:

Dry Season (December to April): Hot, sunny, and the most popular time for travelers. December and January are slightly cooler, making them ideal for sightseeing.

Rainy Season (May to November): Expect heavy, brief downpours, usually in the mid-afternoon. These storms rarely last long and often provide a welcome cool-down. Don’t let the “rainy” label deter you—it’s a great time to find flight and hotel deals!

Vietnam Visa Essentials

Always check the latest requirements from a government source.

E-Visa: The easiest option for many nationalities. Apply online via the official government portal before you travel.

Visa Exemptions: Many countries qualify for short-stay (e.g., 15-45 days) visa-free entry. Confirm your status before booking!

Handling the Vietnamese Dong (VND)

Currency: Get used to big numbers! 100,000 VND is a common note.

Quick Tip: To estimate US Dollar cost, drop three zeros and divide the remaining number by 24 (e.g., 240,000 VND is roughly $10 USD).

Payment: Cash is essential for street food, markets, and local cafes. Larger establishments accept credit cards.

ATMs: Widely available, but most charge a transaction fee. Withdraw larger amounts to save on bank fees.

2. Navigating the Chaos: Transport Tips for Adventurers

From SGN Airport to City Center (District 1)

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is only about 6km away.

Reputable Taxis: Use only Mai Linh (green) or Vinasun (white/green/red). Always insist the meter is running. Avoid random touts.

Ride-Hailing Apps: Grab is the king. Download the app to book fixed-price cars or motorbikes. It is reliable, cheap, and eliminates language barriers.

Getting Around Ho Chi Minh City

Grab Motorbike: The fastest, cheapest, and most authentic way to move around. It’s a core part of the Saigon adventure!

Walking: District 1 is walkable, but save your strolls for the cooler mornings and evenings.

The Saigon Crosswalk Rule: Walk slowly and predictably. The traffic flows around you. Do not suddenly stop, step back, or run. Maintain your pace and the motorbikes will adjust. It feels like a leap of faith, but trust the flow!

For the true “Saigon Adventure” experience, you need to leave the city center.

The Cu Chi Tunnels: An incredible network of underground passages used by the Viet Cong during the war. You can crawl through sections (if you dare!) and learn about the incredible ingenuity and resilience of the soldiers.

Adventure Tip: Book a small-group tour for a more insightful and less hurried experience.

The Mekong Delta Day Trip: Escape the urban jungle for the “rice bowl” of Vietnam. You’ll cruise down the maze-like network of rivers, visit fruit orchards, see a coconut candy workshop, and experience life on the water.

Adventure Tip: Look for tours that take you beyond the main tourist stops and include a small sampan boat ride down a narrow canal. You can also choose option Mekong Delta Tour by Luxury Speed Boat.

If you’re looking to explore the beauty of Vietnam while keeping an eye on your travel fund, our Classic Mekong Delta Tour is a fantastic choice.
5. Staying Safe: Local Tips & Advice

Petty Theft: Be vigilant in crowded areas like Ben Thanh Market or Bui Vien. Keep your phone and camera secure. Carry bags across your body and keep them facing forward.

Haggling: In local markets (like Ben Thanh), haggling is expected. Start at 50% of the initial price and work your way up to a fair middle ground. Note: Prices in cafes and established restaurants are fixed.

Water: Only drink bottled water. Ice is generally safe as it’s machine-made with filtered water.

Travel Insurance: A must-have. Don’t leave home without comprehensive travel insurance that covers emergency health issues and accidents (especially if you plan to ride a motorbike!).

6. Hidden Gems & Local Culture: Beyond District 1

To truly experience the Saigon adventure, you need to step away from the major landmarks. The city’s soul lives in its bustling residential neighborhoods and charming hidden corners.

The Alleyway Life (Hẻms)

The narrow alleys known as hẻms are the DNA of Ho Chi Minh City. Venture off the main street (take a Grab into District 4 or Bình Thạnh) and you’ll discover:

Tiny, family-run food stalls serving just one dish perfectly.

Neighborhood shrines and temples tucked between houses.

The genuine, community atmosphere of local life.

Saigon’s Unique Cultural Spots

The Pink Church (Tan Dinh Church): (District 3). An unmissable, stunningly beautiful cotton-candy pink Catholic church built during the French colonial era. It’s an Instagram favorite and a genuine spiritual landmark.

Adventure Tip: It looks best on a bright, sunny morning!

Chợ Lớn (Saigon Chinatown): (District 5). Explore the largest Chinatown in the world, a maze of markets and ancient pagodas. Visit the beautiful Thien Hau Pagoda (Temple of the Sea Goddess) for a truly atmospheric experience filled with spiraling incense coils.

The Café Apartments (42 Nguyễn Huệ): This old, nine-story apartment block is an architectural marvel where each window houses a boutique café, fashion store, or co-working space. It’s a perfect symbol of Saigon’s blend of old structures and new creativity.

Places I visited in October:

1. HA GIANG

Ha Giang is probably on of the most beautiful mountain provinces in the northern Vietnam.

Autumn, especially October is the best time for traveling in this province. October is the month when it witnesses the end of the wet season in Ha Giang, Vietnam. The month is now ready to experience the fall in the temperature which makes the climate quite relaxing and a soothing one.

Especially, from October to December, Ha Giang Mountains wear one of their most beautiful dresses color. The province, famous for its geological park and breathtaking mountain scenery, is covered in buckwheat flowers.

2. HANOI

October marks the beginning of autumn- the most beautiful season in Vietnam.

This is the time when summer-time heat, humidity and heavy showers have disappeared; cool dry days make this month one of the best times to explore Hanoi’s maze-like streets and colonial buildings.

Compare to September, October’s weather is even milder since its temperature is getting more favored. Autumn and its beauty haven’t faded a bit while cooling wind blow frequently to satisfy people.

Especially at night, when you walk along Hanoi’s streets and besides its lakes, you will breathe in the beautifully sweet fragrance of milky flowers. Milky flowers are a symbol of Hanoi’s autumn. There are many songs and poems that mention their charming fragrance.

3. SAPA

October is the best time to visit SAPA because of its striking mountainous landscapes.

Every scene in Sapa is appeared as a wonderful masterpiece of the natures, making us never get tired of looking at.

Atmosphere, temperature and humidity in October are great to explore Sapa. It is a bit chilly, not too much sunny, and dry. You can visit all of best sightseeings in Sapa and bring home very beautiful pictures.

October is also the harvesting season in Sapa. At that time, Sapa beauty is at its prime. You will see a breathtaking landscape of the golden lush terraced fields, which run along mountains and are highlighted by green forests, have become popular postcard pictures.

4. HALONG BAY

Legends has it that one upon a time, the God sent a family of dragons to protect a bay from invaders and you can see the unique shape of the two thousand plus islands surrounding this magical city resembles the bodies of these mythical creatures.

You would never see anything this amazing in life and I definitely recommend you adding this destination to your bucket list.

Unlike summer with unpredictable weather, Ha Long Bay in October is a different story. It offers some of the best chances of clear skies.

One of the activities is on a cruise ship to little fishing village. It is so fascinating to see how different people lived there. One of the ways locals make money is the paddle you around their turf and showed us the magic of their home. They will take you to these amazing caves. And everything was just so dreamy like a haunting scene from a romantic movie.

5. HO CHI MINH CITY (SAIGON)

This place has crazy traffic with over 8.5 million scooters and best street foods.

You should not miss many attractive sites in the 1st crowded people of Vietnam: War Remnants Museum, AO Show at Opera House, Central Post Office, Ben Thanh Market and the Independence Palace.

On the city outskirts, there are also prominent attractive sites with the famous destination is the Cu Chi Tunnels where you will be guided to the tunnels system including the weapon factory, hospitals, kitchens and crawl under the tunnels.

4 DAYS IN HO CHI MINH CITY (SUGGESTED ITINERARY)

6. CAN THO – MEKONG DELTA

Can Tho where is renowned for interesting floating markets, delicious foods, verdant fruits, and beautiful Buddhist pagodas as well as friendly and warm people is the main and biggest city of the Mekong River Delta. Can Tho is also well – known in the saying “Can Tho, ivory rice, clear water”. The most attractive places in Can Tho are Cai Rang Floating Market, Ninh Kieu Wharf and Bang Lang Stork Garden.

Cruising through the fascinating floating markets of Cai Rang, Cai Be, riding the bike through small local villages, along rice fields and lush orchards, visiting fishing farms, taste some tropical fruits, honey tea, local amazing foods and even drop into some local homestays to learn more about the reason of floating culture and life here.

7. DALAT

People usually come to Da Lat in the summer to avoid the heat, but you should also try to visit Da Lat in late in October. October comes signing the blooming season of wild sunflowers. The flower is also known as the features of Central Highlands because of its primitive beauty that makes it different and strongly attractive to everyone who travel to Vietnam and visit Da Lat.

October comes signing the blooming season of wild sunflowers. Do not forget to visit vintage and unique coffee shops and street foods here.

So you know why I went to Vietnam in October and I hate this country. Because I got jealous with everything (beautiful weather, delicisous food, friendly people and incredible lanscape)

The best places to go shopping in Hanoi are mostly traditional markets and narrow shophouses, but there’s a growing number of independent boutiques and shopping malls offering a wide range of international brands, as well as dining and entertainment options. The best thing about shopping in Hanoi is that you can do it all on foot, with many streets dedicated to specific trades.

This is particularly true in the Old Quarter, where Silk Street and Silver Street still retain their particular trades after hundreds of years. Whether you are looking for gimmicky souvenirs such as Vietnamese farming hats or a hand-made silk evening gown, we have compiled a list of great places to shop in Hanoi.

1. Hang Gai Street (Silk Street)

Hang Gai Street is a great place to pick up some high quality, fashionable silk items in Hanoi. Also known as Silk Street, the entirety of this busy 300 metre-long street is lined with fashion boutiques and tailors, as well as stores specialising in home furnishing.

Famous brands on Hang Gai Street include the colourful Tan My Design, offering ready-to-wear pieces. Squeezed in between the high profile boutiques are some excellent art galleries and narrow souvenir shops selling far cheaper items.

The Hanoi Weekend Night Market is a busy, bustling gathering of stalls and vendors that brings crowds in droves. Taking place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7 pm, the market runs through the Old Quarter, starting from Hang Dao Street and running north to the edge of Dong Xuan Market.

The fashion items on sale may not turn many heads, but many come to the market to enjoy its fun environment and street food. The vendors have plenty of interesting and exotic things for you to try. Bartering is normal, even encouraged here.

Dong Xuan Market has a wide array of products for sale over 4 floors. Located on the northern edge of the Old Quarter, it is an imposing Soviet-style building, surrounded on all sides by merchant shops and stalls.

Dong Xuan Market is a rough-and-ready type of market, especially on the ground floor. Head upstairs and you will find printed tees, bolts of fabric, school uniforms, luggage stalls and much more, all available at wholesale prices. It is quite an experience, even if you only leave with a pair of cheap sunglasses and a Vietnamese conical hat.

Hang Bac Street has been synonymous with jewellery (bac means silver in Vietnamese) for hundreds of years. This small yet atmospheric street still retains many small outlets of jewellers selling rings, necklaces and many types of inexpensive fashion pieces.

There isn’t a particular shop to check out – instead, take a wander from one end to the other and check out the many jewellers, handicrafts and propaganda poster shops along the street. To reach Hang Bac Street, start from the Water Puppet Theatre on the northern side of Hoan Kiem Lake and walk up Hang Be Street until you come to a T-junction.

Nha Tho Street is packed with small fashion stores and excellent restaurants – despite only measuring 110 metres. Located in front of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, it is very popular with the sophisticated set of Hanoi’s middle-class and expat community.

You can find independent boutiques selling Vietnamese-style fashion in western sizes, handmade jewellery and accessories at reasonable prices.

Hang Da Market occupies a modern and air-conditioned building on the western edge of the Hanoi Old Quarter. It has a collection of stalls selling clothes, shoes, bags and accessories. Prices are relatively affordable, and it’s possible to haggle, especially if you are buying in bulk.

On most weekdays, Hang Da Market is quite empty as most of the customers are Vietnamese. Visit on a weekend to enjoy more of a pulse to this sizeable shopping space. The complex is close to Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Hang Dau Street is quite unbelievable at first glance because of the sheer amount of shops selling 1 thing: shoes. There are hundreds of shoe-sellers lining the street, making it a great place to shop around for a nice pair of shoes or sandals in Hanoi.

Most of the footwear consists of brand names made at Vietnamese factories that have been rejected as seconds, making them a great purchase with usually only a small imperfection.

Summary of Current Situation:

Following an announcement on 16 March, 2022, Vietnam has fully reopened for tourism. Perhaps even bigger news: there is no testing on arrival. The only requirements at the moment are a PCR test 72 hours or a rapid test 24 hours before departure. As soon as it is established that guests are COVID negative, they are free to explore Vietnam.

In the official news release, there is no mention of a need to show proof of COVID vaccination. What is clear is that fully vaccinated travellers will be eligible for entry. Whether unvaccinated travellers are eligible for entry will be clarified at a later date.

Furthermore, Vietnam has announced the resumption of visa-free entry for up to 15 days for citizens of 13 countries and e-visas for citizens of 80 countries (below).

Step inside this sacred Taoist temple in Saigon and you will be immediately immersed in an atmosphere of reverence and history. The pagoda is a stunning visual feast, filled with intricate, centuries-old woodcarvings and powerful statues of divinities and legendary heroes. Look up to admire the roof, which is covered in detailed tile work depicting characters from Buddhist and Taoist legends.

Visitor Tip: The air is thick with the smoke of spiraling incense coils. This is a working temple, so please maintain silence and dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) to honor the local worshippers.

No Ho Chi Minh City travel guide is complete without a trip to Ben Thanh Market. Though it can be crowded, this iconic indoor market in District 1 is the ideal place to experience the full force of Saigon’s commercial energy.

As one of the largest and most famous traditional markets in Vietnam, Ben Thanh Market offers an incredible adventure in shopping, haggling, and cuisine. Here, you can spend hours getting intentionally lost in the chaos to find:

Handicrafts & Souvenirs: The perfect place to pick up bargain souvenirs, clothing, coffee, and Vietnamese traditional crafts.

Traditional Vietnamese Food: The food stalls along the outer perimeter (especially at night) are a great, inexpensive place to try local favorites like Bánh Xèo and Phở.

This vibrant, Chinese-style temple, located on Nguyễn Trãi Street, is one of the most important and oldest religious sites in the area, having been built in 1706.

The temple is dedicated to Thiên Hậu (also known as Mazu), the powerful Chinese Sea Goddess. It is believed she flies around on a cloud or a mat, rescuing people at sea—a crucial figure for the Chinese merchant community that established Chợ Lớn.

While the exterior might appear unassuming, the interior is a mesmerizing visual feast:

Intricate Artistry: The halls are filled with countless porcelain figures, detailed dioramas covering the roof, and ornate wood carvings depicting Buddhist and Taoist legends.

Atmosphere: Look up to see the iconic, giant spiral incense coils hanging from the ceiling, filling the air with a sacred, smoky scent.

Just like the diversity of its landscapes, Vietnam offers a variety of ways to get around. You may favour windswept motorbike rides, fly straight from point to point, or take the overland routes of trains and buses, soaking in the sights along the way.

With a little planning (and an adventurous spirit), you can usually get where you want to go easily and comfortably. Within the cities there are plenty of taxis, buses, and cyclos; and out in the countryside, cycling is often an appealing option. Below is an overview of your transport options within Vietnam

Flights in Vietnam

For those short on time, flying is the most convenient way to see several destinations within Vietnam. Many travellers underestimate the distance (and state of the roads) between cities and opt for buses or trains instead of flying. It’s good to note that train rides from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City can run up to 30 hours, and from Central Vietnam to either point, 16 hours is quite common. In light of this, it makes a lot of sense to opt for a one- or two-hour plane ride and spend more time in your destination. Prices for domestic tickets are surprisingly reasonable, and there are daily flights to all of the country’s top destinations.

Vietnam Airlines is the national carrier and has the most flights daily, while Vietjet and Jetstar both offer affordable deals for short hops around the country.

Trains in Vietnam

Averaging about 40km an hour, Vietnam’s trains are an insightful and relaxing way to journey through the country. The North and South are connected by a single, 2,600km-track network managed by Vietnam Railways. The track snakes through the country from Ho Chi Minh City all the way to the Chinese border. Spring for the soft seats and four-berth cabins for a little extra comfort, or splurge on one of the private tourist sleeping cars that are now available for several key routes. The railroad line is undergoing renovations as much of the existing tracks date back to colonial times, so be sure to research before you go.

Hanoi Train Station Address: 120 Lê Duẩn, Cửa Nam, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City Train Station Address: 1 Nguyễn Thông, phường 9, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

Buying train tickets in Vietnam

You can buy your train tickets at counters in Vietnam’s train stations days or months in advance of your trip, depending on the route. Train tickets are also sold through many travel agencies and online through Vietnam’s official train ticketing website.

Children above 5 years old are charged the full ticket price.

All trains have western and squat toilets on both ends of every carriage.

Luggage transport and freight forward service is available on Reunification Express Trains (see below.)

If you’re traveling during Vietnamese holidays and peak times, be sure to book your train tickets well in advance. On ordinary days it’s still a good idea to buy your tickets a few days early. If you’re trying to buy tickets for same-day travel, you can expect the faster trains and best seats to be taken.

The Reunification Express

The Reunification Express isn’t really a train. It’s a line connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, completed by the French in 1936. The 36-hour scenic ride makes stops in Hue, Danang, Nha Trang, and Phan Thiet. A slow but memorable journey, five Reunification Express services run daily (7:30PM; 10PM; 6AM; 9AM; 1:10PM) from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. There are four classes to choose from: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper, and soft sleeper. The cabins are divided into four berths with simple bedding provided.

Buses in Vietnam

Open-tour buses are an increasingly popular service for budget travelers, especially in Vietnam’s southern and central regions. Buses run regularly and reliably between top destinations such as Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Mui Ne, and Ho Chi Minh City. Most open tour buses are sleeper buses, or have deep reclining chairs. A simple Google search will bring up the most reputed open-tour bus companies. We recommend booking one or two days ahead, unless you’re travelling on a Vietnamese holiday: then you’ll want to book seats at least two weeks in advance.

Motorbikes in Vietnam

Vietnam’s quintessential mode of transport, motorbikes are the most convenient way to travel short distances. Independent travellers may like to try long-distance motorbiking for the adventure and spectacular views. Novice motorists should be careful on Vietnam’s streets and observe the local style of driving, which is more ebb and flow than ‘follow the rules’. You’ll find motorbike rental shops in almost every city. Prices depend on the quality of the bike, ranging from 150,000 to 300,000 VND/day for scooters and mopeds. You can expect to leave a deposit or your passport if you’re renting for more than a week. When in Vietnam, never park your motorbike unattended, always wear a helmet, and be sure to check the ticket number if you leave it in a parking lot.

Cycling in Vietnam

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just enjoy a little pedal now and then, Vietnam will reawaken your love for this mode of transport. Although it’s possible to cycle in the cities, Vietnam’s small towns and beach destinations are perfect for two-wheeled excursions. Some of the country’s best guided tours are in fact bicycle tours. You’ll find these in the Mekong Delta and in Central Vietnam. In towns such as Hoi An and Hue, it’s possible to get to almost everywhere you want to go by bicycle (many of the locals do.) Rentals are usually about 20,000 to 30,000 VND per day (about 1$.)

PICKUP

With smiles and friendly greetings, Michelle and Joey caught our attention when we walked to the pickup point.

They explained the itinerary of the night and told us a few safety tips. It was going to rain soon, so we put on raincoats and went to our first stop.

CHILL SKY BAR

The rain stopped when we got to our first destination – a rooftop bar in the center of Saigon.

Due to the rain we couldn’t sit outside, but still had a cozy area to enjoy drinks and view the city.

BIKE AROUND THE CITY CENTER AT NIGHT

After the drinks, we explored some highlights of the city by bike. The town looked different at night time, especially after the rain.

When we drove by Notre Dame Church and Post Office, our guides explained the history and some facts about these attractions.

VISIT THÍCH QUẢNG ĐỨC MONUMENT

If you’ve learned about the Vietnam war, you may have seen the very well-known photograph of the burning monk.

His name was Thích Quảng Đức, and he set himself on fire to protest the persecution of Buddhists in Vietnam.

We visited the monument that now sits at the intersection where he did this. Our guides were very informative and explained the historical significance of his actions.

EXPLORE AN APARTMENT COMPLEX

We drove to one of the oldest apartment complexes in Saigon.

Originally built for American soldiers, they are now home to a vibrant Vietnamese community, and also some of the best street food in Saigon.

VISIT THE FLOWER MARKET

Our next stop was the largest flower market in Ho Chi Minh City.

The market was very colourful with many different shops and varieties of flowers. Definitely a good place to go if you want to test your photography skills.

FILL YOUR BELLY WITH BANH XEO

After some sightseeing spots, it was time to eat, so we visited a local Banh Xeo restaurant.

Banh Xeo is kind of the Vietnamese version of a savoury pancake, filled with seafood and pork and eaten with lettuce and leaves.

The kitchen was placed at the entrance to the shop, and we watched as the chef expertly cooked four pancakes at once!

Besides Banh Xeo, we also ate some yummy summer rolls, as well. Dipped in the Hoisin sauce and peanut, they were ready to go!

NEXT STOP BANH MI!

We then moved to a new location to try out Banh Mi – a Vietnamese style baguette.

This place was particularly famous for its tasty bread, which many of the other Banh Mi sellers in the area bought.

Each sandwich was packed with meat and other ingredients, and we could even try making one ourselves!

ENJOY DELICIOUS SEAFOOD DISHES

Seafood was the last stop and also our favorite one. We tried different food, including grilled shells and steamed clams. All of them were delicious!

OUR TOUR GUIDES

We had a fantastic time with Michelle and Joey.

They were very informative and spoke English well, and told us lots of new information about the city. They also took us to explore some hidden places and local food stops.

Although it rained during the tour and the traffic in Saigon was crazy (it was Saturday night!), their driving skills were impressive.

Overall, we enjoyed the tour. The tour guides were excellent, and the stops were great.
